County Track Meet Rained Out

Mother Nature put a damper on a few highly anticipated sporting events in Pickens County on Saturday.

The Pickens County Track and Field Championships, Opening Day for Easley Little League and the Liberty Invitational Fastpitch Softball Tournament were all rained out when heavy rain and thunderstorms swept through the Upstate.

The county track meet, which began on time at 10 a.m. and was scheduled to last all day at Clemson University’s Rock Norman Complex, had seen only one race finish before the rain became too hard to compete in. Moments later, the lightning alarms at the nearby football practice fields sounded, sending coaches, athletes and spectators scrambling. Many of the hundreds in attendance hurried inside Clemson’s indoor track facility, and around half an hour later the meet was called.

The only event completed was the JV mile run. Several field events began, but were unable to begin before the weather set in.

Liberty coach Daniel Graybeal, this year’s meet organizer, said that plans are not yet finalized for rescheduling the meet, which is sponsored by the Pickens County Courier, Trophies Unlimited and the Gilstrap Family Dealerships.
